Our 2009 breeding season is unusual. Presidio had pigeon fever late this winter. When none of the mares settled on the first cover I was suspicious that his fertility might have been affected. When we checked we found that he has plenty of sperm - over 80,000,000 per hpf - but that 97% of them were dead. Since he has sperm and a very intact libido he will probably return to normal fertility within the year. In the meantime crisis has again yielded opportunity. My great friend Judy Yancey of Yancey Farms is helping me select semen from some of the best available German stallions. Next year I will have up to five foals that are not related to Presidio. I will get potential future mares for Presidio and his son and, with luck, an additional stallion candidate to cover the Presidio related mares. It will also allow me to assess whether Presidio continues to be the best match for my foundation mares. Plus I'll get to find foal names that don't start with "P"
UPDATE!!! Despite having a very low motility (2-3%), Presidio still managed to settle 3 of the 4 mares he bred - one on the first cover and 2 on the second. Apparently the mares were so happy with our new pasture breeding program that they just couldn't get enough of him and were showing signs of being in season even though they were already pregnant.
